Top 5 Underappreciated Disney Movies

For this list we are ranking the top 10 Disney movies that do not get the recognition of some of their more famous counterparts. For this list we are sticking to Disney Studios only, so no Pixar will be included, and their animated features.

  1. Raya & the Last Dragon (2021)

Raya & the Last Dragon follows Raya as she tries to save her country, and learns how to trust again. This film feels like this generation’s Mulan. Raya has the courage, heart, and love for family that Mulan does, without having any musical moments. While most Disney films include songs to keep kids engaged, this film does not need them. Filled with adventure, dangerous situations, and humor, kids of any age will stay engaged from beginning to end.

2. Meet the Robinsons (2007)

Meet the Robinsons follows a young orphan as he travels to the future to meet his future family. This film is criminally underrated. This film has incredible humor, hijinks and heart, while wrapped in a powerful story about finding and building a family. This film is without a doubt one of my favorite films.

3. Treasure Planet (2004)

Treasure Planet blends the classic Treasure Island with an intergalactic splendor. The animation style in this film is pure art. From the character design, background, to how the characters move. While the film follows the heroes on their quest for treasure, at the same time the film infuses a strong lesson about growing up and taking responsibility. This film is perfect for any young adventurer.

4. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

Another great film for every young adventurer. This film is slightly more well known. The story follows the awkward scientist Milo as he and a group of explorers discover the lost city of Atlantis. This film is very overlooked considering it has multiple strong female characters and also has amazing animation. Like with every Disney movie, this film has an underlying message for kids. Kids follow Milo as he goes from bumbling scientist to learning how to have confidence and stand up for what is right in the face of opposition.

5. The Princess and the Frog (2009)

While the Disney Princess catalog is quite extensive at this point, this princess doesn’t get talked about enough. A modern twist on a classic fairytale, the story follows Tiana as she works towards her dreams of owning her own restaurant and untimely gets derailed by a frog and some voodoo magic. This story is great for kids as it teaches them about hard work while also not working so hard you miss the people in your life. From the animation style, to music, to the voice work, this film blends classic American with the rich culture and style of New Orleans, and stylistically sets it apart from other Disney Princesses.
